Promiment singer and former Awami League lawmaker Momtaz Begum has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from Dhanmondi area in the capital.

This information was shared in a brief message sent by the DMP Media Wing on Monday (12 May). 

Details about the arrest or the charges against her have yet to be disclosed.

Deputy commissioner of DB's media and public relations told BSS that they apprehended her around 11:30pm.

She was accused in multiple cases related to the 2024 July uprising, he added.

She will be produced in court tomorrow.

In 2009, the famous folk artist became active in politics with the Awami League and was elected as an MP from reserved women's seat-21 under the party's nomination of the same year. 

Subsequently, she was elected as lawmaker from the Manikganj-2 (Singair-Horirampur) seat for two consecutive terms in the 2014 and 2018 elections.

In the 12th national election, she was the AL nominated candidate for the Manikganj-2 seat. However, she lost the election to her party's independent candidate Deowan Zahid Ahmed Tulu.

Although she was not elected as an MP, she had been serving as the president of the Singair upazila Awami League for a long t ime.

Momtaz has recorded around 700 music albums in the country.
