The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested seven suspected members of an inter-district robbery gang while they were allegedly preparing to rob a gold shop.

The arrests were made during a raid in the Jatrabari area of the capital last night, Detective Branch (DB) Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam told a press briefing at the DMP Media Center today (11 May).

Police seized firearms, ammunition, explosives, and two vehicles during the raid, he added.

The arrested individuals were identified as Masud Rana Chowkidar (38), Shakil (21), Mamun (40), Md Rabbi (26), Md Asad Mia (45), Md Palash Sheikh (37), and Anwar Hossain (44).

According to DB officials, Masud Rana was first arrested with a foreign-made pistol and seven rounds of ammunition. Based on his confession, police later recovered and defused 36 handmade explosives (cocktails) from his residence.

Nasirul said a gang of 10-12 robbers led by Anwar Hossain of Kishoreganj and Palash of Barisal were preparing to rob New Dolly Jewelers in Baultoli Bazar of Gopalganj district. Based on a tip-off, the DB conducted a raid and arrested Shakil, Mamun, Rabbi and Asad Mia from Jatrabari area and seized two vehicles. Later, Palash Sheikh and Anwar Hossain were arrested from Dholaipar area on the same day.

The joint commissioner further said the gang is trained in the use of rifles and weapons across the country to rob gold shops.

"Since January 2025, the DB has arrested a total of 87 robbers, significantly reducing robbery incidents in Dhaka and its surrounding areas," he also said.
