Dhaka international mobile film festival launches its 12th edition at ULAB

The Dhaka International Mobile Film Festival (DIMFF) inaugurated its 12th edition at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) permanent campus, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the festival.
Founded in 2015, DIMFF has grown over the past 12 years into a significant platform for showcasing mobile filmmaking talent from around the globe. At the launch event, Unfolding DIMFF 2026, the festival unveiled a refreshed logo to bridge traditional rickshaw art with contemporary independent art, celebrating cultural heritage through modern expression. It also introduced the theme for its upcoming edition: "Latim"—a nod to childhood games' playful spirit and nostalgia.
The event began with a welcome speech by Professor Din M. Sumon Rahman, PhD, followed by remarks from Dr Mohammad Shazzad Hossain, PhD, the visionary founder of DIMFF. Prof. Din M. Sumon Rahman said," This student-led festival, now in its 12th year, continues to amaze us with its energy, creativity, and freedom."
A special screening of the Hoichoi series "Jimmi" was held during the ceremony, attended by members of the production team, including director Ashfaque Nipun, Co-producer Adnan Al Rajeev, and executive producer Md. Habibur Rahman Tareq, and DOP Barbarkat Hossain Polash. A live discussion with the team followed the screening, offering audiences insight into the creative process behind the series. Adnan Al Rajeev said, "Short films at Cannes have always captivated me. While producers often focus on the bigger picture, the short films ground us—they're the creative building blocks that shape our storytelling journey."
Ashfaque Nipun mentions, "Organising has always been my thing—but seeing what they've created with a mobile phone? That's instant magic. I envy your spontaneity and your creative courage. DIMFF is a beautiful platform, and I truly loved the show."
Festival Director Zahra Nusrat shared her hopes for a vibrant and joyful festival season. Certificates were presented to the organising team members who have served DIMFF for one year. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Co-Advisor Pantha Rahman.
Advisor Syeda Sadia Mehjabin and Instructor Farhad Hossain Fahad hosted the launch ceremony.
This year, DIMFF introduces six diverse categories for film submissions: Open Door (open to all), Vertical Film (open to all), Short Film (for university students), Citizen Journalism (open to all focuses on mobile-made documentary films), One Minute Film (for students from grades 1 to 12)
A new Outstanding Talent Award has been introduced to recognise exceptional crew members behind the scenes.
Film submissions for DIMFF 2026 are open until September 24, 2025.
