The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has suspended the registration of a passenger bus which continued speeding even after its roof was torn off in an accident in the Samashpur area of Munshiganj's Srinagar upazila recently.

A letter, signed by BRTA Dhaka Metro-2 Circle (Ikuria) Deputy Director Md Sanaul Haque, was issued in this regard today (19 April).

According to the letter, on 17 April, the Barisal Express bus, registered as Dhaka Metro-B-14-9350, was speeding along the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway when it struck a car on the Kamarkhola Rail Flyover in Srinagar.

The collision caused it to crash into a covered van ahead. The impact severely damaged the roof of the bus.

Witnesses reported that upon seeing police and military vehicles behind him, the driver drove even more recklessly.

Eventually, the bus hit the roadside railing at Samashpur, which resulted in the entire roof being ripped off and thrown onto the road.

Eight passengers were injured in the incident.

The bus driver and their assistant fled the scene after the incident.

The BRTA letter addressed to the bus owner states that, under Rule 46 of the Road Transport Rules, 2022, the registration of the vehicle has been suspended.

The owner has been instructed to appear in person at the BRTA Dhaka Metro-2 Circle office with all relevant documents — including the vehicle's registration certificate, tax token, fitness certificate, route permit, and the driver's licence.

Failure to appear and respond under Section 24 of the Road Transport Act, 2018, may result in permanent cancellation of the vehicle's registration and further legal action, adds the letter.
