Some advisers of the interim government wish to remain in power for five years, BNP Vice Chairman Asaduzzaman Ripon said today (11 April), taking a jibe at Home Adviser Lt Gen Jahangir Alam's recent remarks that some people want the current government to extend its tenure for five years.

"Some advisors have grown a desire to stay in power for five years. They say people want to see them in power for five years. This is a lie," the BNP leader said while addressing a public rally organised by Louhajang BNP and its affiliates at Louhajang Government College in Munshiganj.

He said the people want to see an accountable government. "They want to vote. They want to establish the government through voting."

The BNP vice chairman also said, "I want to remind this government that it is called an interim government. The interim government is not supposed to have a five-year plan. Building an international airport is not the job of the interim government. Making Bangladesh a Singapore is not their job.

"Their job is to make sure that there is an international airport in the future so that Bangladesh can become Singapore, that drugs are eradicated from the country, and that our children can move around smoothly."

Addressing the rally, Ripon said, "We want a change in Bangladesh. We want the rule of the people in Bangladesh. We do not want any Mughal emperors or zamindars in Bangladesh."

Speaking to local journalists in Sunamganj after visiting the Shantiganj Police Station yesterday (10 April), Home Adviser Jahangir said, "Many people on the street are telling me that you [the interim government] should stay for 5 more years."

The remark has drawn criticism from political parties.

"Our home adviser has said that people are saying this government should stay in power for five years. I would like to ask him, are you expressing the government's thoughts? What exactly is your agenda? What is the real objective behind such comments?" Biplobi Workers Party General Secretary Saiful Huq said at a solidarity human chain programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club today.
