Coast Guard rescues 33 from the clasp of 'dacoits' in Sundarbans

Coast Guard has rescued a total of 33 people, including six women, from the clasp of "dacoits" in a drive inside the Sundarbans.
The 33 people who have been rescued were abducted by Karim Sharif dacoit group, Media Officer of Coast Guard Lt Commander Siam-ul-Haque confirmed this noon (10 April).
"We received secret information that the Karim Sharif dacoit group had seized 16 boats and kept 33 people hostage inside their secret hideout," the commander said.

"Based on this information, the Coast Guard conducted a special drive at Mallakhali area beside Korkori River in the Sundarbans. Sensing our presence, the dacoits fired blank shots and fled inside the forest quickly," the commander added.
"Later, a total of 33 people including six women were rescued from the secret den. Besides, the boats have also been recovered," the commander further said.
Quoting the rescued people, the commander said the 33 people went to the Sundarbans from Koyra to catch fish and crab yesterday morning (9 April).
"Later, the Karim Sharif group abducted them and asked for Tk10,000 each as ransom," Commander Siam said.
The victims, all from Khulna, were taken to Coast Guard's Koyra station and given primary treatment and food, Coast Guard said.
"Preparations are ongoing to hand over the rescued people and the boats to their families," Commander Siam said.
Efforts are underway to prevent pirates and criminals and ensure security for the fishermen in areas under the jurisdiction of the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard official further said.
