3 members of 'Boro Jahangir' pirate gang surrender to Coast Guard; hostage fisherman rescued
The surrender took place at the Coast Guard's Mongla Base this morning.
Three members of the notorious 'Boro Jahangir' pirate gang surrendered to the Bangladesh Coast Guard today (9 July), handing over firearms and securing the release of a fisherman they had been holding hostage.
The surrender took place at the Coast Guard's Mongla Base this morning, where the pirates also deposited two locally made single-barrel guns, one improvised pipe gun and 40 rounds of ammunition.
The surrendered pirates are Al Amin Hossain of Mongla upazila in Bagerhat, Taibur Rahman of Tala upazila in Satkhira and Moniruzzaman Mamun of Khulna's Koyra upazila.
Coast Guard West Zone spokesperson Commander Md Mansurun Mahdeen confirmed the matter in a press release.
The trio had long been active members of the Boro Jahangir gang, which has been involved in armed robberies across the Sundarbans and in abducting fishermen and forest workers for ransom, according to the press release.
It also added that the gang members decided to surrender after sustained special operations left the group cornered and unable to continue its activities. They also released a fisherman who had been held hostage.
Commander Mahdeen said continuous Coast Guard operations, intelligence surveillance and regular patrols have significantly weakened pirate groups operating in the Sundarbans, making it increasingly difficult for them to carry out criminal activities.
He noted that on 21 May, seven members of another notorious pirate group, the 'Chhoto Sumon' gang, also surrendered to the Coast Guard along with their weapons and ammunition.
