A night guard was shot dead allegedly by unknown individuals on Eid night (31 March) in Dhaka's Savar.

The incident occurred around 11:30pm yesterday in the Savar Municipality's Bashpotti area, Inspector (operations) of Savar Model Police Station Md Helal Uddin told The Business Standard today (1 April).

The victim has been identified as Rubel Mia, 30, son of Nur Mohammad Khalifa from Barishal district. He was residing in a rented house owned by a person named Monir Hossain in the Bashpotti area and had been working as a night guard in the area for the past two months.

The inspector said an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the murder. "The body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for an autopsy, and several individuals are being questioned regarding the incident."

Palash Chandra Das, duty manager at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, said, "Rubel was brought to the hospital dead at 11:52pm yesterday. Family members of the victim claimed that he was shot dead, but the confirmation regarding gunshot wounds will be determined after an autopsy."

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station Jewel Mia said the motive behind the murder remains unclear.

"While the motive for the killing remains unknown, preparations are underway to file a case," the OC added.

Speaking to TBS, Rubel's wife, Rahima Begum, said Rubel returned home after his duty when someone called him around 11pm. He then left the house, and later, the family was informed that Rubel had been shot.

According to locals, on 23 February, a person named AKM Asaduzzaman uploaded a video on a Facebook group called 'Savarer Jonogon.' The video showed, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, former joint convener of Savar Thana Chhatra League Mukhtar Hossain, armed with a firearm, along with Rubel (the victim).

A long-standing land dispute over five decimal land in South Boktarpur between Asaduzzaman and Mukhtar's elder brother, Monir, could have played a role in the viral video incident. Locals speculate that the dispute might have contributed to tensions between Mukhtar and Monir, potentially linking it to Rubel's murder.
