A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced Abdul Malek, a former driver of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), to 13 years imprisonment in a case over amassing wealth illegally.

He was also ordered to pay Tk1 lakh, or in default he would get an additional six months in jail.

It also sentenced Malek to three years jail under another section of the law for concealing wealth information.

The court also asked the authorities concerned to confiscate Tk1.5 crore of Malek.

ACC lawyer Asaduzzaman said Malek has to face a maximum ten years of jail in the case.

The court also fixed 16 April for hearing the case filed against Malek and his wife for wealth illegally.

Syed Nazrul Islam, assistant director of ACC, filed a case against former DGHS driver Abdul Malek and his wife Nargis Begum on 14 February 2021 for amassing wealth of Tk1.1 crore.

According to the case statement, Malek directly assisted his wife in acquiring wealth worth Tk1,10,92,050 beyond known sources of income.

Another case was filed against Malek on the same day.

According to the case statement, Abdul Malek has amassed Tk1,50,31,810 illegally but submitted a false statement of Tk93,53,648 to the ACC.

The ACC submitted a chargesheet in the two cases on 27 October.
