The family of Sujan Hawladar, who was lynched on suspicion of attempting to rape a four-year-old girl in Barishal, has alleged that they are being threatened by those responsible for the lynching not to file a case over the incident.

Speaking to The Business Standard today (19 March), they claimed that they left their home fearing for their lives amid the threats.

"The people who killed my son are now threatening me. The man who led the attack, Bachchu, told me that if I name him as an accused, my other two sons and I will meet the same fate as Sujan," Sujan's father Monir Hawlader told TBS.

He further said, "Locals told me that Bachchu and his men were ready to attack us and would not let us live. The killers are roaming freely, while I am forced to hide at a relative's house in the city."

Mentioning that he went to the Kotwali Model Police Station this afternoon to file a complaint, Monir said, "The police told me they would determine the accused themselves and advised me not to name anyone unnecessarily.

"I told them I have no intention of falsely accusing anyone. I saw a video of my son being beaten, and I identified those who were attacking him. The police wrote their names down," he added.

"Before determining his guilt or innocence, they murdered him. I demand justice for the killers," Monir said.

Attempts were made to contact Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman for comment, but he did not respond.

However, when contacted via WhatsApp, he responded that the victim's family had not yet filed a complaint.

When asked whether the police had any information about the family fleeing due to threats, the OC said he was unaware of such incidents.

Furthermore, when asked about the family's visit to the station today, the OC did not respond.

On 15 March, locals beat Sujan to death at Rice Research Road area in Barishal city.

According to police, a case was filed against Sujan for allegedly attempting to rape a four-year-old.

Locals tied Sujan to a tree and beat him severely after learning about the case.
