The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a man for allegedly attempting to rape his niece in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi.

The accused, Md Shihab alias Samiul Alim Shihab, 22, was apprehended in a joint operation conducted by law enforcers in Chhatni union of Natore's Sadar upazila around 1:15am today (11 March), according to a press release from RAB-5.

Shihab, a resident of Sarishabari Bazar area in Puthia, is the maternal uncle of the victim. Due to their familial relationship, he frequently visited the girl's house.

According to the press release, on 26 February, around 2pm, when the victim was alone at home and performing Zuhr prayer, Shihab entered her room. He then forcibly grabbed and harassed her.

The incident sparked outrage in the community, prompting a human chain protest in Puthia demanding Shihab's arrest. The victim later filed a sexual harassment case with Puthia Police Station.

After the case was filed, law enforcement agencies, including RAB, launched an investigation into the incident. Upon his arrest, Shihab was handed over to Puthia Police Station for further legal proceedings.
