The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants against 10 people in connection with the death of Shaikh Ashhabul Yamin, who was shot dead by police and thrown from an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 18 July 2024 in Dhaka's Savar.

A three-member bench of the tribunal led by chairman Justice Md Golam Murtaza Majumder passed the order today (11 March) and fixed 18 May for submitting a report against them.

Members of law enforcement agencies and Awami League leaders were among the accused, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim told The Business Standard.

"So far, 20 cases related to the July mass killings have been officially filed with the special tribunal," he said.

Mohammad Abdullah Alamin Kadir, maternal uncle of Yeamin, lodged a complaint against 78 people on 23 September last year, reports UNB.

On 18 July that year, Yamin, a fourth-year student of computer science and engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), was shot dead by police during the movement in the Savar Bus Stand area.

Advocate Shakil Ahmed said police and Awami League activists carried out an attack on the peaceful movement on 18 July near Savar's Bank Colony area. "They shot Yeamin after dragging him from the APC vehicle."

"The law enforcers were seen keeping Yeamin on the road and a directive was given to the police to shoot Yeamin again. Police dumped Yeamin near the road divider. Later, he was taken to Enam Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead," he added.
