A complaint was filed with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today (11 March) against 121 people including former Bagerhat-1 lawmaker Sheikh Helal Uddin, his son and former Bagerhat-2 lawmaker Sheikh Tonmoy, former mayor of the Khulna City Corporation Talukder Abdul Khaleque and his wife Habibun Nahar.

Student leader Nayeem Shikder, who got shot and still carrying more than 400 shrapnel in his body, filed the complaint with the Chief Prosecutor's office at the tribunal.

"On 4 August, we learned that many students were detained and kept confined in Bagerhat and Khulna. We decided to free those from their confinement in Talukder Abdul Khaleque's house in Khulna. We went there and found his wife Habibun Nahar assembled many armed cadres of Chhatra League and Jubo League to guard the house. There were armed policemen as well," Nayeem told newsmen after filing the complaint at the tribunal.

As students were nearing to the house after Asar prayers, police, Chhatra and Jubo League men attacked them with gunshots, tear gas shells and brickbats. Students too retaliated with brickbats. At one point, policemen seemingly surrendered to us, calling us near for negotiation, Nayeem said.

"As me and my comrades got close, they said, what do you want? I said free our brother those are kept confined. They said they can't do this. At this point, I saw they were circling us. As I sensed danger, I told my associates to run for their lives and I tried to shield them. Police and Chhatra League cadres opened fire and I got shot on my back. My comrades took me on their back and fled the scene. They took me three private hospitals in Rupsha area, but all of them refused to provide medication, referring order from the administration," he added.

Later one authorities of one hospital, following repeated persuasion from the students, bandaged Nayeem on the street to stop the blood. One doctor later pulled one bullet from inside his back, that too without applying any anesthesia or any other medicines.

Confirming the matter to reporters, prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said the prosecution will take further steps in this connection.
