The government has nominated seven distinguished individuals for the 2025 Independence Award in recognition of their brilliant and outstanding contributions at the national level. 

Among them, six will receive posthumous awards, including Abrar Fahad, a Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student who was murdered by Chhatra League men in October 2019. 

The Cabinet Division published the list of nominees for the highest state award today (11 March).

According to the list, Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam (posthumous) in Science and Technology and Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud (posthumous) will receive the Independence Award in Literature this year.

Sculptor Novera Ahmed (posthumous) has been nominated for the award in Culture, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed in Social Service, and Mohammad Mahbubul Haq Khan aka Azam Khan (posthumous) in Liberation War.

Moreover, Badruddin Mohammad Omar will receive the Independence Award in Education and Research. Abrar Fahad (posthumous) has been nominated for the award in the Rebel Youth category.

The government has been presenting the Independence Award every year since 1977 on Independence Day, 26 March.

Recipients of the Independence Award are given Tk5 lakh, a 50-gram gold medal of 18-carat quality, a replica of the medal, and a certificate of honour.
