Police arrested a young man in a case filed over the alleged rape of a college student in Chattogram's  Sitakunda.

The youth, identified as Md Rakib (25), was arrested from the Guliyakhali area of Muradpur Union this afternoon (9 March).

Confirming the arrest, Sitakunda Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Alamgir said, "On the night of the incident, the student's mother filed a rape and kidnapping case against four people. One person has been arrested in that case. Efforts are underway to arrest the rest."

College student alleges she was raped at Sitakunda beach

Yesterday (8 March), a college student alleged that she was raped by a group of men while visiting the Guliakhali beach in Sitakunda.

Hearing the scream of the student, locals rescued her and informed the Sitakunda police. A police team then reached the spot and took her to the station for inquiry.

Sitakunda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mujibur Rahman, however, said the girl wasn't raped.

"The victim told us that some local men forcibly took her to the forest. When the girl's brother and friend who were with her screamed for help, they fled," he told reporters.

According to locals, the girl had gone for a walk on the beach with a friend and her younger brother this afternoon. While crossing the embankment in the area, four young men forcibly took her to the garden area of the coastal forest.
