A small cargo vessel sank in the Meghna River near Miarchar in Hizla upazila of Barishal on Saturday.

Amin Hossain, master of the MV Farhana Monem cargo ship, said they were going to Chattogram from Narayanganj with 13,000 sacks of Shah Cement.

"When we reached the Meghna river adjacent to Miarchar in Hizla upazila, the ship got stuck in the char due to strong waves and currents. It then tilted to the right and water began to enter the ship. At one stage the front part of the ship went under water," he recounted.

Amin further said that all crew members were rescued after the accident. However, all 13,000 sacks of cement were submerged in the water.

Assistant Sub-Inspector of Hizla Naval Police Outpost Md Mamun said nine crew members of the ship were rescued with the help of fishermen from a fishing trawler in the river.

"There were no casualties in the incident, but all the goods have sunk. The matter has been reported to BIWTA officials," he said.
