Commission needs to talk with Hasina, Moyeen Ahmed for BDR mutiny reinvestigation: Chairman

Chairman of the National Independent Investigation Commission Major General (Retd) A L M Fazlur Rahman today said they are trying to talk with former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and ex-army chief Moyeen Uddin Ahmed over the BDR carnage at Pilkhana in 2009.
"Moyeen Uddin Ahmed was army chief at that time. We need him and his statement to know why the operation failed and why so many people and army officers were killed. Sheikh Hasina fled to India. We are seeing it as a challenge to talk with Sheikh Hasina and Moyeen Uddin Ahmed," he said in a press conference held at the BRICM Bhaban at the Science Laboratory.
ALM Fazlur Rahman, also former director general of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), now Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), said the commission has taken a decision to communicate with some foreign embassies and a letter has already been sent to the foreign ministry to this end.
The letter has been given to know the whereabouts of the people involved in the BDR massacre as many of them are required to complete its re-investigation, he said, adding that they are trying to locate them.
Replying to a query about imposing a travel ban on some people, Fazlur Rahman said that they did it as they might need to talk with them about the 25-26 February 2009 carnage, in which 74 people including 57 army officers were killed.
About taking into cognizance the probe reports of some committees to investigate the BDR massacre after the incident occurred, he said they have already received the investigation reports of Lt Gen Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd), now the home minister and former secretary Anisuzzaman.
The commission chairman said they will not talk with the BDR personnel who were recently released from the jail. They can talk with the commission if they want or they can give necessary information through its website https://www.bdr-commission.org/, he added.
He said they are trying to submit the probe report by the given 90 working days, but it may require more time to connect those staying abroad.
Other members of the Commission are Maj Gen Md Jahangir Alam Talukder (Retd), Brigadier General Md Saidur Rahman, Bir Pratik, (Retd), retired joint secretary Munsi Alauddin Al Azad, retired DIG Dr M Akbar Ali, Md Shariful Islam, Associate Professor of Political Science Department of Dhaka University, Md Shahnewaz Khan Chandan, assistant professor of Institute of Education and Research of Jagannath University were present.
