Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has said economists must take some responsibility for the success or failure of the current government, whether they want to or not, because many of them hold key positions within it.

"To survive, everyone must understand something. Economics is also a crucial subject that needs to be learned. We deal with economics every day," he said today while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Bangladesh Economics Olympiad at a hotel in the capital as the chief guest.

He added, "Two Bengali economists from India have won the Nobel Prize in economics. Although Dr Muhammad Yunus did not receive the Nobel Prize in Economics, he was awarded the prize for his contributions to the field. This fact cannot be denied.

"So, in that sense, we have achievements to be proud of. However, while many economics professors from West Bengal have earned significant international recognition, we still lag behind in this regard. Our future generations must now focus on this area," he also said.

He stressed the importance of extracurricular activities for students, saying, "If we want to develop our future generations, we must advance through small initiatives like these Olympiads."

"These Olympiads play a crucial role in motivating students. If we can expand various subject-specific Olympiads across the country, everyone will benefit. Our students have immense talent, but we often fail to utilise their potential properly," the BB governor said.

Hossain Zillur Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Economics Olympiad and former adviser to the caretaker government, presided over the event, while Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Nurun Nahar attended.
