An ad-hoc committee, formed on 30 September 2024, took charge of the Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) after its interim executive committee was dissolved.

The association made the announcement in a press statement, signed by Office Secretary of the interim committee Mostafa Saiful Anwar Bulbul, today (12 February).

From today, the ad-hoc committee, led by its President Md Azizur Rahman, chairman of Notre Dame University's Economics Department, and its General Secretary Syed Mahbub-E-Jamil will carry out all the activities of BEA, the statement reads.

On 3 October 2024, the now-dissolved committee of the BEA rejected the ad-hoc committee under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Bangladesh Economic Association, heavily opposing and protesting the formation of the ad-hoc committee.

On 1 January 2025, a 29-member interim committee was formed following a decision at the 21st meeting held by the executive committee of BEA, with Prof Dr Mahbub Ullah as its convener and Mohammed Helal Uddin as its member secretary.

The ad-hoc committee accused the interim committee as an ally of the autocrats and alleged that it had been formed by breaking rules.

The interim committee was postponed on Wednesday following these allegations, sources said.
