Students from Narsingdi Textile Engineering College blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Narsingdi for 4.5 hours today (11 February), protesting the government's decision to shut down the college and relocate students to Tangail Textile Engineering College.

The blockade started around 11:45pm at the Sahepratap intersection of the highway, creating severe traffic congestion in surrounding areas and causing immense sufferings to commuters.

The protesters withdrew the blockade around 4:15pm after issuing a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding that their college be brought under the Department of Textiles.

Narsingdi Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rashed Hossain Chowdhury told The Business Standard that the protesters lifted the blockade after the administration held discussions with the students.

"They have stated their demands. We will inform the higher authorities about the demands," he said.

The protesting students said the decision to shut down the college's activities transferring the students to Kalihati Engineering College is humiliating.

They demanded that the decision be canceled and the college be transferred from the Handloom Board to the Textile Department.
