Former social welfare minister Nuruzzaman arrested from Rangpur

The Rangpur Metropolitan Police arrested former social welfare minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed from Rangpur city this evening (30 January).
 
Police sources said Nuruzzaman was arrested from a relative's residence on Post Office Lane, Central Road, in the metropolis around 8:30pm. 
 
Confirming the arrest, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali told reporters that the former minister was arrested from that house based on secret information.
 
"There are several cases against him, including charges of assault, murder and attempt to murder during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement," he told reporters.
 
A case has been filed against the minister and his son and 128 others in the incident of the death of Mahmudul Hasan Munna during the anti-discrimination movement in Rangpur. 
 
Munna's father Abdul Majid filed the case in the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court on 29 August last year. 
 
In this case, police conducted a raid at the city's Babupara station on Tuesday night (28 January) and arrested Al-Amin Hossain, a leader of the banned organisation Chhatra League, along with a sharp weapon. 
 
Earlier on 27 October last year, Lalmonirhat District Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Shamsuzzaman Ahmed Bhutto, the younger brother of former Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed, from Kaliganj Bazar in the same case.   

Eight cases have been filed in the name of former minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed in Lalmonirhat district since 5 August.
