Taking a jibe at ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman today (17 January) called on her to return to the country if she really loves Bangladesh and its people.

"If you have the courage, come back to Bangladesh…Come back to us and we'll give you a good place in Kashimpur Central Jail," the Jamat chief said at a party workers' conference in Chuadanga.

Criticising the Hasina-led Awami League government over its alleged persecution of Jamaat activists, Shafiqur claimed that the Awami League had systematically targeted Jamaat men and killed eleven of its top leaders.

"They [Awami League] also killed intellectuals, educators, and experienced citizens to maintain power. Awami League and its allies had looted religious institutions and carried out widespread destruction across the country," UNB quotes him as saying.

Highlighting Jamaat's stance ahead of the upcoming elections, the Jamaat leader stressed that the party would not sell its votes and would fight against corruption, black money, and muscle power.

He reiterated that the elections must be fair and transparent.

"Until we establish a corruption-free and misrule-free Bangladesh, Jamaat will not stop," he said, asserting the party's stance on continuing its movement for justice and fairness, reports UNB.

Stating that the interim govt will not be able to complete all of its goals due to its short tenure, Shafiqur urged it to at least set up one medical college in Chuadanga.
