BSMMU launches ABC of Research Methodology

To advance medical research and thesis activities at BSMMU (Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University), the 5th edition of the book "ABC of Research Methodology and Biostatistics," written by Professor Dr MD Mozammel Hoque, was unveiled.

The event was held on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the Super Specialized Hospital of BSMMU convention hall. The Honourable Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU, Professor Dr. MD Shahinul Alam, was the chief guest at the book launch ceremony. In his speech, Professor Dr. Mohammad Shahinul Alam, the Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU, mentioned that the book contains 26 chapters, including topics such as survival analysis, demonstrating that BSMMU's research activities are progressing. He emphasised that the university's primary mission is knowledge generation, which requires research. He also pointed out that research methodology involves structuring ideas, which is essential for research. Thus, this book will play a significant role in enhancing the university's research activities and improving the quality of research. However, he also noted the importance of ensuring that research meets public health needs and is focused on disease prevention.

The event was chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Dr Shamim Ahmed, with special guests including Professor Dr Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, the Honourable Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Dr. Mohammad Mujibur Rahman Howlader, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), and Professor Dr Nahreen Akhter, the Treasurer. Professor Dr.Mohammad Mozammel Hoque delivered the welcome address. Resident Dr. Sharif Al-Nur read the keynote address on behalf of Professor Shubhagata Chowdhury. Other speakers at the event included the Dean of the Faculty of Surgery, Professor Dr. Mohammad Ruhul Amin, and pediatric specialist Professor Dr Mahbub Motanabbi. Faculty members, doctors, and resident students from the university were also present at the ceremony.

In his written address, Professor Shubhagata Chowdhury praised Professor Dr Mozammel Haque for making complex topics in medical research and statistics accessible, particularly for undergraduate and postgraduate students. His clear and simple explanations have made the book highly popular among students and faculty, leading to the release of five editions. Professor Dr. Mozammel Haque has also written two other highly sought-after books on complex subjects: "ABC of Medical Biochemistry" and "ABC of Arterial Blood Gas and Acid-Base Disorder."

In his welcome speech, Professor Dr. Mozammel Hoque stated that the "ABC of Research Methodology and Biostatistics" book will contribute significantly to the research activities of medical educators and students. He noted that it will also benefit students completing their theses and dissertations and examiners. He also pointed out the critical need for such books in medical research, which led him to write this book in 2001, with the first edition published in 2009.

Professor Dr. Mozammel Haque is a professor in the Biochemistry Department at BSMMU. He obtained his MBBS degree from Dhaka Medical College and M.Phil and FCPS in Biochemistry from BSMMU and BCPS. He has received specialised training in research methodology and biostatistics from the Public Health College in Manila, Philippines. He is actively involved in research and teaches biostatistics to postgraduate medical students. He has also been serving as a resource for BCPS's dissertation writing, research methodology, and biostatistics training programs for doctors since 2005.
