Bangladesh Women's team pacer Jahanara Alam has taken an indefinite break from cricket, citing mental health issues, said BCB women's team chief selector Shazzad Ahmed Shipon.

"Jahanara Alam gave us a letter to take a break from the cricket. She cited mental health issues. The board approved it. Hopefully she will return with domestic cricket," Shipon said in a video message sent by the BCB today.

The BCB as a result kept Jahanara out of the squad for Bangladesh Women's team's maiden tour of the West Indies.

Jahanara who played 52 ODIs and 83 T20Is in her career so far returned to the side after one year's absence in July 2024. She was included in the T20 World Cup squad but did not feature in any game. She was the part of Bangladesh's last home series against Ireland. She though played T20 series only, was benched during the ODIs.

Shipon however said that they are excited about West Indies tour where Bangladesh will play three ODIs and as many T20Is.

This ODIs series holds special importance as both sides are seeking crucial ICC Women's Championship points for direct qualification for the 50-over World Cup in India later this year.

"We are really excited. We have the opportunity to have a direct qualification to the World Cup. We have to win minimum two matches. We are hopeful about our chance," he said.
