NSU holds seminar on circadian rhythm in health and ageing

In a key step towards enhancing biomedical sciences and understanding age-related processes, the North South University Pharmaceutical Sciences Department hosted a "Circadian Rhythms in Health and Aging" seminar on December 18, 2024.

The seminar focused on the role of circadian rhythms in regulating the ageing process, highlighting critical discoveries on molecular mechanisms and circadian clock dysfunction with age.

The keynote speaker for the event was Dr Yasukazu Nakahata, Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Nagasaki University, Japan. Dr. Nakahata is a renowned expert in the field of circadian biology with an extensive academic background and international postdoctoral experience from institutions such as the Osaka Bioscience Institute (Japan), IGBMC Institute (France), and the University of California, Irvine (USA). His research primarily explores the regulation of the "ageing clock" and its cellular-level impact, as well as mechanisms that lead to weakening circadian systems as organisms age. In his insightful speech, he said, "Aging of the Circadian clock is reversible". He also emphasized inserting NAD+ (an enzyme that regulates the circadian clock and decreases with our ageing) in our bodies.

The seminar was delighted by the attentive presence of the Honourable Vice-Chancellor of North South University, Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Dean of the School of Health & Life Sciences, Dr Dipak Kumar Mitra, and Chairman of North South University Pharmaceutical Department, Professor Dr Mohammad Hossain Shariare. Professor Dr Mohammad Hossain Shahriar underscored the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry. The Honourable Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, graced the stage with his presence. Honourable Dean Dr Dipak Kumar Mitra also delighted the afternoon with his inspiring statement. He added, "We may have a longer life if this research result is accepted and used officially".

The seminar also included an interactive question-and-answer session where students could engage with the speaker.

This seminar was a success, paving the way for fostering an environment of learning, innovation, and scientific inquiry. Such seminars are also an excellent platform for aspiring researchers to gain valuable insights and inspiration from leading experts in their respective fields.
