A Chattogram court has placed MA Latif, former member of parliament for Chattogram-11 constituency, on a two-day remand in a case filed over an attack on protesters in the city's New Market area during the student movement.

Judge Alamgir Hossain of the Chattogram 3rd Metropolitan Magistrate Court granted the remand today (18 December) following a hearing, Public Prosecutor Mofizul Hoque Bhuiyan told The Business Standard

"The investigation officer of the case had sought a 10-day remand. After reviewing the arguments, the court granted a two-day remand for MA Latif," he said.

According to the case documents, on 4 August, during protests in the New Market area, assailants armed with local weapons, rods, sticks, and machetes launched an attack on students. Tafhimul Islam, a fourth-year student of Islamic Studies at the University of Chittagong, was injured during the violence.

Following the attack, Tafhimul filed a case naming 735 individuals and accusing an additional 1,000 to 1,200 unidentified people. MA Latif was listed as the 23rd accused in the case.

On 17 August, police arrested Latif from the city's Bayezid Bostami Shrine Gate area. He was later shown as arrested in another case filed with the Double Mooring Police Station and subsequently sent to jail.

Latif faces multiple cases across various police stations, including allegations related to shootings during the student movement and other charges.
