A seven-year-old child was killed in a house fire that blazed through seven thin-shed rooms of a colony yesterday in the Dattapara area of Tongi.

The deceased was identified as Miraj, son of Khorshed Alam from Maidam village of Bhurungamari in Kurigram. Miraj lived with his parents in a rented room in the Lutfa Begum house.

The incident took place at around 9:30pm when two fire units rushed to the spot and worked for about an hour and a half to bring the fire under control, said fire service Senior Station Officer Mohammad Shahin Alam.

The child was rescued and taken to the hospital but he died from burns, according to the police.

Tongi East Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Faridul Islam said, "Upon receiving the news of the child's death, police were sent to the scene… Legal action will be taken."

According to locals and police, Miraj's father Khurshid Alam is a rickshaw puller who lives with his family renting a room in that house.

Last night, Miraj had dinner with his grandmother and then fell asleep. After a while, his grandmother locked the room and stepped outside.

Suddenly, a fire broke out which quickly spread to other parts of the house.

While others managed to escape, Miraj, trapped inside due to the locked door, could not get out.

Later, locals and fire service personnel managed to douse the fire.
