Ripon Das, an accused in the murder case of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, has confessed to his involvement in the crime before a Chattogram court.

The statement was recorded last evening (14 December) in the chamber of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sarkar Hasan Shahriar.

This brings the total number of accused to confess in the case to three.

"Ripon Das was presented before the court after the completion of his remand period. He confessed in the judge's chamber," said Mahfuzur Rahman, assistant commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (Kotwali zone) and the case's investigating officer.

Quoting Ripon's statement, Mahfuzur said on the day of the incident, Ripon Das was chanting slogans at the court premises, demanding the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das, the spokesperson of the Sanatani Jagoron Jote, who was under arrest in a sedition case.

Later, Ripon moved to the Sevak Colony area, where lawyer Saiful Islam was brutally killed with sharp weapons.

Ripon Das said he recognised 10 to 12 individuals who participated in the killing. He worked at a pharmacy in the city's Chawkbazar area, said Mahfuzur.

Following his confession, the court ordered his transfer to jail.

On 9 December, another accused, Chandan Das, confessed in court, followed by Rajib Bhattacharya on Friday (13 December).

Chandan Das earlier said during his confession that he, along with Ripon Das, Om Das and Ranab, attacked Saiful with sharp weapons and inflicted fatal injuries.

Other attackers beat Saiful with blunt weapons. Chandan also claimed he did not know some of the attackers.

On 26 November, former Iskcon leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was transported to prison in a van after being denied bail.

His followers blocked the vehicle and staged a three-hour protest. Police used batons and sound grenades to break up the protesters, leading to clashes between law enforcers and protesters.

In the aftermath, lawyer Saiful was brutally attacked and killed in an alley opposite the Chattogram court premises.

Footage of the incident shows Chandan, the prime accused in the murder case, wearing a grey helmet, an orange shirt, and black pants, wielding a machete.

Ripon Das was seen wearing a blue shirt, jeans, and a red helmet and wielding a weapon.

On 30 November, Saiful's father filed a murder case naming 31 individuals, while his brother Khan-e Alam filed another case under the Explosives Act against 116 people for vandalism and assault.
