Two female garment workers were killed and another seriously injured after a car hit them in Gazipur on Saturday morning.

The deceased were identified as Shantana Rani Barman, 30, wife of Sunil Chandra Barman of Pirgachha area under ​​Madhupur police station and Rekha Rani Barman, 30, of Bhabanipur Pingail area of ​​Gazipur Sadar upazila.

The injured Maya Rani Barman, 32, is the wife of Sridham Chandra Barman of Bhabanipur Pingail.

The victims were workers of Palmal Group's garment factory in Bhabanipur area.

Naojor Highway Police Station Sub-Inspector Fariduzzaman and local people said the three female workers were on their way to work on Saturday morning.

When they reached in front of Jason factory in Bhabanipur area on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway around 8:15 am, a Dhaka-bound over-speeding sedan from Mymensingh lost control and ran over them.

Shantana was killed on the spot. Locals rescued the two injured and took them to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Tongi. However, Rekha died on the way to the hospital. Another critically injured Maya was later shifted from that hospital to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopadic Rehabilitation in Dhaka for better treatment.

Upon receiving the news, police recovered the dead bodies and sent them to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for autopsy. Police seized the private vehicle from the spot but the driver managed to escape the scene.

Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital's Emergency Department in charge, Dr Tariq Mahmud said, "Rekha was brought to the hospital dead. Seriously injured Maya has been referred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopadic Rehabilitation. Her legs were broken in the accident and various parts of her body were injured."
