'Winter clothes shopping, Wednesday rush' lead to heavy congestion in capital

Winter clothes shopping spree and Wednesday rush are the two reasons why there is heavy traffic in the capital today (11 December), according to traffic police officials.

Heavy traffic has been observed in major thoroughfares of the capital, especially after 5pm.

Speaking to The Business Standard, Snehasis Kumar Das, assistant commissioner of Tejgaon Traffic Division, said although there was no particular reason for traffic jams in the area, the roads leading to New Market from Farmgate saw more congestion today.

The gridlocks have spread from there to other nearby areas.

"More people are travelling to the New Market area to purchase winter clothing," he said.

Meanwhile, Ramna Zone Traffic assistant commissioner Abdul Hanan said the number of vehicles on the roads was more on Mondays and Wednesdays compared to other days of the week, leading to increased congestion.

"Due to gridlocks in the Bangla Motor More area, traffic congestion has been created on the Moghbazar route," he said.

Taking to the Traffic Alert page, commuter Rubaiya Audity said she started from Uttara Sector-13 at 5:10pm. She had not even reached Niketon two hours later.
