Creating an environment where workers will not have to take to the streets, risking their lives, to get their dues is the aim of the Labour Reform Commission, its chief Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed has said.

"The commission will devise its proposals keeping everyone's expectations and reality in mind through collective and coordinated efforts," he said at a views exchange meeting at the Labour Building in the capital yesterday.

Also, the role of the labour ministry is crucial to ensure proper implementation of the law, he added.

Senior officials of the Labour Department, present at the meeting, emphasised effective implementation of the workers' welfare and social safety programmes.

The officials also made various proposals at the meeting, including dissolving industrial issues, preventing labour unrest, creating a central database of the workers and modernising workers' welfare centres.

During the meeting, the officials said only reforming the laws will not be enough, rather infrastructural development of the labour ministry and improving administrative capacity are also needed.

Members of the commission Dr Mahfuzul Haque, Kamran T Rahman, Taslima Akhtar, Advocate AKM Nasim and Chowdhury Ashiqul Alam also placed their views.

They expressed optimism that the views placed in the meeting will act as a guideline for the future activities of the commission.
