A Dhaka court today put the owner of a student hostel in city's East Rajabazar on one day remand for stealing his 50 tenants' certificates and other goods for failing to pay rent.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masudur Rahman passed the order as police produced Alif Chatrabash owner Khorshed Alam before the court and pleaded to place him on a three-day remand in the theft case.

Police arrested Khorshed on early Thursday.

According to the case documents fifty students of private Sonargaon University in the city's Green Road area used to live in the hostel as tenants. As the government declared holiday amid coronavirus crises in March, the students went to their homes locking their rooms.

Recently they learned that their landlord threw away their certificates and other goods from their rooms as they failed to pay the three-month room rent.

Later, a tenant named Md Sohan filed the case with Kalabagan Police Station in this regard.
