A Chattogram court has granted a seven-day remand for eight individuals accused of attacking police and vandalising property following the imprisonment of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sanatan Jagaran Jote.

Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddique granted the remand plea after police requested custody of the suspects for interrogation today (2 December),  Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Riaz Uddin confirmed the development.

The suspects, identified as Partha Chakraborty, Apurba Sheel, Ujjal Das alias Johnny Das, Apu Chandra Saha, Niloy Das, Dhrubo Das, Md Delwar Hossain, and Md Nuru were arrested in connection with the violence.

The chaos erupted last Tuesday when Chinmoy Krishna Das was denied bail and sent to prison following his arrest in a sedition case filed by a former BNP leader.

As Das was being transported in a prison van, his supporters blocked the vehicle, staging a protest for nearly three hours.

The standoff escalated as police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officers used baton charges and sound grenades to disperse the crowd. The situation further intensified with clashes between Das's supporters and law enforcement personnel.

Amid the turmoil, violence spilled into Rangam Convention Hall Lane, opposite the court building. Advocate Saiful Islam Alif was fatally attacked by a mob that beat and hacked him to death.

In the aftermath, police filed three separate cases against the protesters for assaulting officers, vandalism, and obstructing law enforcement. Additionally, Alif's father filed a murder case naming 31 individuals, while Alif's brother, Khane Alam, filed another case under the Explosives Act, accusing 116 individuals of vehicle vandalism and attacks on the public.

Investigations into the incidents are ongoing, with the authorities emphasizing the need for accountability and order in response to the violent outburst.
