The newly appointed chief election commissioner (CEC) and four other election commissioners have taken the oath of office for the next five years.

Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed administered the oath to CEC AMM Nasir Uddin and the four commissioners at the Supreme Court Judges' Lounge at 1:30pm today (24 November).

Supreme Court Registrar General Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan conducted the function.

Judges of the Appellate Division, members of the Election Commission search committee, officials of the Election Commission, and employees of the Supreme Court Registrar General's office, among others, were present.

Earlier, the five commissioners had arrived at the Supreme Court premises at around noon for the swearing-in ceremony.

The four election commissioners are Md Anwarul Islam Sarker, a retired additional secretary; Abdur Rahmanel Masud, a retired District and Sessions judge; Begum Tahmida Ahmed, a retired joint secretary; and Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah.

On 21 November, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed former secretary AMM Nasir Uddin as the new CEC and four others as election commissioners in line with Article 118 (1) of the constitution.

The Cabinet Division issued separate gazette notifications to this end.

The new commission has been constituted based on the recommendation of a six-member search committee, which the interim government formed on 29 October. The committee later recommended the names of qualified individuals for the positions of the CEC and other commissioners.
