3 issues decided to resolve NBR stalemate: Finance ministry

Three issues were decided at the two-and-a-half-hour-long dialogue with revenue department top officials on Thursday evening (26 June), to resolve impasse caused by the ongoing movement under the banner of the NBR Reform Unity Council.

Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed presided over the meeting, which was held at the Ministry of Finance at the secretariat in the city.

In a statement, Ministry of Finance today (27 June) said that the meeting was attended by the finance secretary, the secretary of the Financial Institutions Division, the chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and 16 members of the NBR.

Following a detailed discussion, three key decisions were reached during the meeting.

First, the NBR Reform Unity Council agreed to withdraw its previously announced full-scale shutdown and March to NBR programme.

Second, the meeting resolved to reconsider the two recent transfer orders issued by the National Board of Revenue.

Lastly, it was decided that on 1 July, at 4pm, a joint discussion will be held involving leaders of the NBR Reform Unity Council, the Advisory Committee on Board of Revenue Reform, and NBR members to review the proposed amendments to the Revenue Policy and Revenue Management Ordinance, 2025, in line with the Ministry of Finance's press release dated 25 May.

The government expects that through the discussion in the meeting to be held on 1 July, it will be possible to make the necessary amendments to the Revenue Policy and Revenue Management Ordinance, 2025 by 31 July based on the opinions of all.

In the greater national interest, including keeping the country's business and trade, import and export, and public service activities running, the government has issued instructions to withdraw the complete shutdown programme and the March to NBR programme announced by the NBR Reform Unity Council and all the officers and employees of the National Board of Revenue to stay in their offices and concentrate on all activities, the statement added.
