Onion price surges to Tk120 per kilogram

The prices of both local and Indian onions have been on the rise even after 26 days since India stopped exporting the essential kitchen product. Both categories of onions were being sold at Tk120 per kilogram in the retail market on Friday.

However, the wholesale price of both types of onions was Tk110 per kilogram at Karwan Bazar on Friday morning.

The retail price of onions imported from Myanmar was at Tk110 per kg.
"The price of onion is becoming abnormal day by day. I bought onion at Tk100 per kilogram just three days ago," said a buyer named Habib Riad at Karwan Bazar.
After India's decision to stop onion export to Bangladesh, Agriculture Minister Mohammed Abdur Razzaque termed the resulting price hike a temporary phase.
The price saw a slight downtrend after two weeks of the ban, but now the price is on the surge again.
Meanwhile, the price of chilli has increased by Tk20 per kilogram.
On Friday morning, one kilogram of chilli was being sold at Tk80 at different markets of the city. The price was Tk60 a day ago.
"Yesterday I bought chilli at Tk50 per kg and sold at Tk60. Overnight, the price jumped high and I had to buy the product at Tk70 per kilogram, and now selling at Tk80," said Jahangir, a retailer in Karwan Bazar.
Potato was being sold at Tk20 per kilogram at Karwan Bazar retail shops, while the wholesale price was Tk16-Tk17.
Wholesalers said, "The price slightly increased over the last week."
According to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) sources, potato is being sold at up to Tk25 per kilogram at different kitchen markets in Dhaka.
Locally grown garlic was being sold at Tk130-Tk160 based on quality. Meanwhile, the ginger price was mostly unchanged and was selling at Tk130-200 per kilogram.
