Onion price crosses Tk100 mark in Dhaka within two days
Likewise, onion price has also crossed the Tk100 mark per kg in the wholesale market of Chaktai-Khatunganj of Chattogram, with rates soaring by Tk20-25 in just 2 days
The price of locally produced onions in Dhaka markets has crossed Tk100 per kg, with retail prices ranging from Tk100-105 in different areas of the capital.
According to data from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), today (3 November), local onion prices in Dhaka ranged between Tk95 and Tk105 per kg.
Just two days ago, the retail price was around Tk90 per kg — meaning onion prices have surged by Tk10–15 within only 48 hours.
Traders said the price hike in major onion-producing districts has directly impacted the capital's markets.
Explaining the reason for the increase, Shyambazar onion trader Jashim Mia told The Business Standard, "Prices had remained stable as long as local supply was good. But now, supplies from wholesale hubs have fallen, which is pushing prices up."
A field visit to the Shyambazar wholesale market today found local and hybrid onions selling at Tk94 per kg, up from Tk84 the previous day — a Tk10 rise overnight even at the wholesale level.
Jamal, a customer shopping for onions at New Market, complained, "The price jumped so suddenly that shopping now costs much more. It's becoming increasingly difficult for ordinary people to buy daily essentials."
Price also upsurged in Chittagong
Likewise, onion price has also crossed the Tk100 mark per kg in the wholesale market of Chaktai-Khatunganj of Chattogram, with rates soaring by Tk20-25 in just 2 days.
Locally grown onions were being sold for Tk90–105 per kg today (3 November) in the wholesale market while the price was Tk72–85 per kg on 30 and 31 October.
"There is a shortage of supply in the market. The amount of onions arriving in the markets is not sufficient. As imports have decreased and the local harvest season has ended, stock levels have dropped, leading to higher wholesale prices," said Idris Mia, general secretary of the Khatunganj Hamidullah Mia Market Traders Association.
Sellers said, suspension of Indian onion imports has tightened supply, creating market volatility.
