Mitch McConnell, Senate majority leader said that the House did something no other Congress has ever done - impeached a president who hasn't "committed an actual crime."

The top Republican made a vehement stance in favour of the president and criticized the decision of the House, reports the CNN.

"Speaker Pelosi's House just gave in to a temptation that every other House in our history has managed to resist," McConnell said.

The Senate leader said that the House impeached a President whom they do not even allege has committed an actual crime known to law.

Mitch McConnell vented: "230-year tradition died last night."

Leader of the Senate minority, Democrat Chuck Schumer rebutted the Republican leader. He stated that, despite their disagreements, he will meet with the Senate leader and discuss the impeachment trial with him.

"Each Republican senator will face a choice: Do they want a fair trial or do they want to allow the president free rein?" said Schumer.
