US assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian Affairs, S Paul Kapur, is set to visit Bangladesh in early March as the United States seeks to work closely with the newly elected government to promote regional prosperity and security.
The planned visit was highlighted during a courtesy call by US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen on Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman at his office today (23 February).
Ambassador Christensen congratulated Khalilur Rahman on his new role and expressed optimism that Bangladesh-US relations will reach new heights through strengthened collaboration across trade, investment, defence, security, development partnerships, immigration, and people-to-people exchanges.
Before meeting the foreign minister, Ambassador Christensen also paid his first courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, discussing bilateral issues of mutual interest.
The discussions reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between Bangladesh and the United States, grounded in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a commitment to peace and development.
The Rohingya crisis was also addressed, with the foreign minister expressing appreciation for continued US humanitarian aid and requesting sustained political support for the safe and sustainable repatriation of displaced Rohingya to Myanmar.
Paul Kapur, who was sworn in as assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian Affairs on 22 October 2025, will visit Bangladesh to advance these priorities. Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasised Washington's eagerness to cooperate with the new government on regional security and prosperity.
