Right from the beginning of the post-covid era, the automotive industry of Bangladesh has become saturated with SUV and crossover offerings from both new and established brands. However, at the same time, brands are keeping one or two MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) offerings to diversify their portfolio to attract a wider range of customers.

While these MPVs used to be nothing more than generic people carriers once upon a time, the market is heating up with fresh contenders offering practicality, modern features, and efficient performance. For this feature, we look at four of the best MPV options currently available in the local market.

Mitsubishi Xpander

The Xpander has been a staple offering from Mitsubishi for quite some time now. And why wouldn't it be? After all, it is the most practical MPV one can get in this segment.

It offers a diverse lineup for all demographics of users. Youths might opt for the Xpander Cross which blends SUV-inspired design and vibrant colour options with unmatched practicality, while people looking for a reliable family haulier can save some money by opting for the regular Xpander.

Inside, a spacious cabin accommodates seven passengers comfortably. Features like a 9-inch infotainment system, rear AC vents, and multiple storage compartments enhance convenience. Safety is also a highlight, with traction control, ABS, and hill-start assist as standard.

The Xpander offers a three-row seating arrangement with comfortable seats and commendable spacing. There are a plethora of seat configurations, numerous cup holders and charging sockets, which make it effortlessly adapt to the demands of modern life. While it skips out on a sunroof, it makes up for it with second-row AC vents fitted on its ceiling. This ensures uninterrupted airflow for rear passengers and balanced air circulation throughout the cabins.

Powering the Xpander is a responsive 1,499cc 4A91 DOHC MIVEC straight-four engine. While the engine's output of 105 horsepower and 141 Nm torque is not jaw-dropping, the Xpander impresses with refined ride quality and stability. The soft suspension setup soaks up bumps, making it ideal for city commutes and long highway drives.

With its premium appeal, fuel efficiency, and reliability, the Mitsubishi Xpander remains the best choice for families looking for a reliable MPV from a trustworthy automaker in Bangladesh.

The Hyundai's Stargazer, launched in late 2024, is one of the newest offerings in the local MPV segment. Like other Hyundai models, it offers a bold, futuristic design to the MPV segment, featuring a distinctive LED light bar, sleek body lines, and a modern stance. While its design might look a bit unconventional, it is to optimize the vehicle's aerodynamic efficiency while bringing in a new modern aesthetic.

Step inside, and the Stargazer surprises with premium features such as a floating display and ambient lighting. For infotainment, it features an 8-inch touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Passengers get flexible three-row seating arrangements and even optional second-row captain seats in higher trim variants.

For driving and safety features, the Stargazer comes with six airbags, a rearview camera, electronic stability control (ESC), an electric parking brake with auto hold, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), hill start assist control (HAC) and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Powering the Stargazer is a 1500cc Smartstream engine producing 113 hp and 144 Nm of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The setup is designed to enhance fuel efficiency while the long wheelbase may ensure a smooth ride, making it a strong contender for urban families.

With its futuristic looks, efficient powertrain, and tech-heavy interior, the Hyundai Stargazer is an excellent choice for families seeking a modern MPV with premium features.

The current Kia Carens, unlike its predecessor, has a bit of SUV-flair to it. Yet, it retains the core features of a MPV such as a spacious interior and technologically advanced interior. It is particularly focused on its visuals, featuring sleek LED headlamps, a muscular stance, and a distinctive front fascia that is reminiscent of other Kia models.

Inside, the Carens boasts a tech-loaded interior. The premium cabin comes with a 10.25-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is paired to a Bose sound system which not only delivers a surreal audio experience but if you're stressed from driving in traffic, will even play ambient nature sounds.

The three-row seating layout offers flexibility, with a one-touch electric tumble function for easy access to the third row. Besides, the front seats are ventilated, and even offer a sunroof.

Safety is a key highlight, with Kia equipping the Carens with six airbags, ABS, ESC, hill-start assist, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in select variants.

Under the hood, the Carens offers a 1500cc Smartstream petrol engine delivering 115 hp and 144 Nm of torque, mated to either a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Overall, the power delivery is well-balanced and the ride quality is more focused towards comfort and stability for long journeys.

With its blend of style, comfort, and modern tech, the Kia Carens is a top-tier choice for families looking for a premium MPV experience.

Perodua Aruz

Perodua, Malaysia's largest automaker, introduced the Aruz as an affordable yet capable MPV for Bangladeshi buyers in 2024. The Aruz is essentially a Toyota Rush in a different outfit.

Inside, the Aruz is utilitarian, with plenty of hard plastics and minimal frills. However, it comes with a factory-fitted infotainment system—basic, but it spares you the aftermarket hassle. There's no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, but Bluetooth connectivity pairs well with the six-speaker audio setup.

The second-row seats are adjustable, though sparse in features. No armrests here, but the blue-striped fabric adds a splash of character. A standout is the overhead climate control panel with multiple vents and an adjustable fan, keeping rear passengers comfortable. For safety, it features six airbags, stability control, and autonomous emergency braking

Under the hood sits Toyota's trusty 1500cc 2NR-VE engine, delivering 100 horsepower and 133 Nm of torque to the rear wheels—a rarity in a segment dominated by front-wheel-drive setups. Fuel economy is decent too: Perodua claims 8.5 km/L in the city and 13 km/L on the highway, which is fair given its size and Bangladesh's subpar fuel quality.

With its rugged styling, roof rails, and SUV-like proportions, the Aruz stands out as a practical, well-priced and unmistakably familiar option in Bangladesh's Toyota dominated car scene.

Specifications:

Engine: 1500cc 2NR-VE

Transmission: 4E-AT

Max Power: 100 bhp

Max Torque: 133 Nm
