After the release: Where is the Sundarbans tigress?

There was something deeply moving about the moment the tigress finally walked back into the Sundarbans.

On 12 July 2026, after nearly six months of treatment and rehabilitation, the Bengal tigress, aged about 10–11, was released near Andharmanik in the Chandpai Range of the eastern Sundarbans. Months earlier, she had come perilously close to death, caught in a snare set for deer. The wire had badly injured her front left leg, damaging skin, muscle and blood vessels and causing a serious infection.

Her rescue and recovery were remarkable. Forest officials and veterinary staff immobilised her, took

her to the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department's facility in Khulna, and nursed her through a long convalescence. She reportedly refused ordinary meat at first and was fed liver; gradually her appetite and strength returned. When live prey was provided, she killed and ate it, convincing the team she had regained a capacity essential to life in the wild.

But hunting was only one part of the test. The harder question was whether, after almost six months under human care, she could again function independently in the Sundarbans' complex ecological and social environment.

The moment of release

When the cage door opened at Andharmanik, the tigress did not bolt for the forest. She hesitated for almost an hour. When she finally stepped out, she seemed reluctant and moved awkwardly, picking her way along the muddy bank into the dense vegetation.

Researchers soon followed her pugmarks for about 150 metres. The tracks showed her moving steadily away from the release site. It was an emotional moment and, understandably, one of celebration.

But a tiger walking out of a cage is not the same as a tiger returning to the wild. That distinction is crucial.

What happened after the release?

The Forest Department installed 20 camera traps across about eight square kilometres, saying monitoring would continue for at least a year. The tigress did not appear in the photographs.

By 29 July, more than two weeks after release, no camera had recorded her. Patrols and drone surveillance found nothing either. Other tigers were photographed, but their stripe patterns did not match hers.

The effort was expanded: another 20 cameras brought the total to 40, and surveillance extended towards the eastern bank of the Shela Nadi and the Joymani area. Yet by 21 August, more than a month after release, she had still not appeared in any image. Local press reports said three other tigresses had been recorded in the deeper parts of Andharmanik.

Where is she?

At present, nobody can say with certainty.

Her absence from the cameras does not mean she has died. Tigers are elusive, can travel considerable distances, and can move through an area without passing in front of a camera. Forest officials have rightly cautioned against assuming she is dead. Equally, though, the absence of evidence of death is not evidence of survival. That is the cautious scientific position.

Rehabilitation does not end when the animal can hunt

The programme deserves genuine recognition. Saving an adult Bengal tigress from a severe snare injury is no small feat. Her kill of live prey was certainly encouraging, but it took place in a controlled setting. The wild presents an entirely different set of challenges.

A rehabilitated tigress must find water and prey, move through unfamiliar or changing terrain, avoid people and snares, and negotiate other tigers' territories. She must establish or reclaim a home range without being seriously injured by resident animals. Six months of captivity, necessary to save her life, makes the post-release period especially important.

The question, then, is not whether a tiger can kill prey. It is whether it can live independently in a complex natural environment. Post-release monitoring is therefore not an optional addition to rehabilitation. It is an integral part of it.

The question of individual tracking

One of the most important issues is the decision not to use a satellite or radio collar. Some wildlife experts had recommended one before the release. But obtaining a satellite collar from the United States would reportedly take several months and require substantial funding, so the Forest Department relied primarily on camera traps.

There are legitimate considerations on both sides. A collar is not a magic solution: it must be properly fitted, regularly checked and suited to the animal's size, health and behaviour, and earlier tiger-collaring in Bangladesh raised concerns about possible health complications. Camera traps, meanwhile, are non-invasive and valuable, capturing other wildlife sharing the habitat as well.

But they answer different questions. A camera trap records an animal only when it passes through its field of view. A tracking device shows where the animal is moving even when it is nowhere near a camera. That distinction matters most when the survival and adaptation of a recently rehabilitated tiger are the very questions we need to answer.

The forest was not empty

The tigress was released where she had apparently been recorded by camera traps before, and the area was reportedly considered to have enough prey. As she is female, it was also hoped that some risks of territorial conflict might be reduced. That gave a reasonable basis for choosing the site.

Yet releasing a tiger is not simply a matter of finding forest with enough prey. The Sundarbans is a living social landscape occupied by other tigers. Subsequent camera-trap work identified several in the area, including three tigresses, and later analysis indicated a male and a female with two cubs nearby. Whether the released tigress met any of them is unknown.

This does not mean she should not have been released. It highlights the complexity of releasing a territorial carnivore into an occupied landscape. Before such a release, we need to understand, as far as possible, the existing population structure, territorial occupancy and the space available to the newcomer. A patch of forest that looks vacant on a map is not necessarily unoccupied tiger territory.

What if she simply moved away?

One plausible explanation for the absence of photographs is that she moved beyond the camera network. Forest officials note that a tiger can travel 30–40 kilometres.

If she did, where did she go? Did she establish a home range? Did she encounter another tiger? Did she find enough prey? Did she approach human settlements? Did she meet another snare? Is she thriving? Or, tragically, did she die somewhere beyond the monitoring area?

Without individual tracking, these questions are extremely hard to answer.

We should not declare success—or failure—too soon

There is a natural tendency in conservation to treat a visible intervention as the completion of a successful operation. The tiger has been rescued. The wound has healed. The cage has been opened. Therefore, the programme has succeeded.

But the outcome of a rehabilitation programme cannot be measured at the moment an animal leaves its transport crate. It is determined afterwards. Can the animal survive on its own, establish a stable home range, find food and water, avoid human conflict and live alongside its own kind? Can it ultimately contribute to the wild population?

In this case, we simply do not know. Acknowledging that is not a weakness. It is an essential part of sound conservation science.

The larger lesson for Bangladesh

The story of this tigress should not become an argument against rescuing and rehabilitating injured wildlife. Quite the opposite. Bangladesh should become better at rescuing, treating and, where appropriate, returning wild animals to nature. But rescue and rehabilitation must be understood as a complete process, not a sequence ending with the opening of a cage.

Every major release of a large carnivore should ideally be backed by a written protocol covering the animal's condition, behaviour and prey-handling ability, the release site, existing wildlife, nearby settlements, potential threats and post-release monitoring. Most importantly, the monitoring strategy should be designed before the release, not assembled afterwards.

Where technically and ethically appropriate, individual tracking should be considered. If a satellite collar is unsuitable or unavailable, other methods can be integrated into a coordinated system: strategically placed camera traps, skilled spoor tracking, drones, rapid-response field teams, and technologies such as acoustic sensors, machine-learning software, environmental DNA (eDNA), and thermal and infrared imaging.

The objective should be a system in which no released animal simply disappears from our knowledge.

A missed scientific opportunity

This tigress could also have given Bangladesh an extraordinary scientific opportunity. Her movements, habitat selection, prey use and interactions with other tigers could have shown how a rehabilitated adult tigress uses the Sundarbans after a long period under human care, and informed future releases.

Some of that opportunity is already lost because we do not know where she is. That should encourage us, not discourage us, to improve the scientific design of future releases.

A question still waiting for an answer

The image of the tigress stepping into the Sundarbans remains powerful. After six months of pain, treatment and confinement, she finally walked towards the mangrove forest that had been her home. We should be proud of the people who saved her. We should also be humble about what we do not yet know.

The latest confirmed reports do not establish that she has died. Nor do they offer convincing evidence that she is alive and thriving. Her pugmarks shortly after release confirmed that she entered the forest, but later camera-trap efforts have failed to identify her. The Forest Department continues to look for her.

Perhaps she is somewhere deep in the mangroves, hunting quietly beneath the moonlight, having already established a new territory. Perhaps she has travelled far beyond Andharmanik. Perhaps the next camera-trap photograph will suddenly settle the matter.

We should hope for that photograph. But the larger lesson should not depend on it.

When we return a rescued wild animal to nature, opening the cage is only the beginning. The real conservation work starts after the animal disappears into the forest.

In this case, the most critical photograph remains missing: the one that would show convincingly that the rehabilitation succeeded.
