Let’s get to the root of your scalp struggles
A healthy scalp is essential for strong, soft and shiny hair, yet it is often neglected in our routines. Using targeted treatments and visiting a salon for a deep cleanse every fortnight helps keep things in check

The basic hair care routine our grandmothers and mothers blindly followed was simple: oil your hair and shampoo less. This kept their hair healthy, and although it worked for generations, in today's era and climate, this routine no longer does the trick.
While we all want stronger, softer, shinier hair, we often forget that the scalp needs care too — it is the root of many hair and skin issues.
Face wash, toners, serums, moisturisers — we have multiple steps for skin care but hardly any for the scalp, even though it's part of our skin. We lather shampoo into our scalps three times a week or spritz some dry shampoo on days we can't be bothered, not realising that this could be harming our scalp. Add sun exposure and pollution to the mix, and you have a recipe for damage.
But it is never too late to start. Start small with a good cleanse, rebalancing, and moisturising. When picking a mask, check if it suits your hair and scalp type — this will help keep your scalp hydrated. Regular cleansing, ideally at least three times a week, is a must to keep the scalp clean and balanced.
If you have specific scalp concerns, using a treatment or cure regularly is important. A visit to the salon for a deep cleanse every fortnight also helps in keeping things in check.
Karishma Rahman, the owner of Zuri by Karishma Rahman, shared how different scalp issues require different care.
"There are two kinds of dandruff problems — seasonal and severe. A lot of people in our country experience dandruff during monsoon and winter, so we offer a Scalp Detox Treatment for our clients," she said.
Karishma explained how the treatment deeply cleanses and detoxifies the scalp using an in-house scrub made with Himalayan Pink Salt. The scrub, paired with a massage, helps boost blood circulation.
It works as a natural physical exfoliant, combined with nurturing ingredients to gently remove product build-up, dead skin, dandruff, and sebum. It also helps balance the scalp's pH level and oil production over time. Since the salt absorbs excess oil, it's excellent for oily or greasy scalps, but they've tailored it to suit most skin types.
"To further enhance the detox, we incorporate laser comb therapy and ozone treatment. This combination boosts circulation, promotes hair growth, and has strong antibacterial benefits that support scalp health," she added.
The treatment leaves the scalp feeling refreshed, light, and balanced, and helps reduce scalp acne and irritation.
Although skin irritation and acne aren't always linked to scalp neglect but they can become recurring if the scalp is not properly cared for.
Sumaiya, 26, noticed an itchy patch near her left ear that looked like an infection. Thinking it was just dry skin, she heavily applied Vaseline. Days passed with no improvement. She tried scrubbing it off, which led to bleeding and pain. Eventually, she decided to visit a dermatologist.
The cause of her infection? Dandruff stemming from a dry scalp.
"Scalp can be the main cause of infections, since untreated dandruff causes irritation, leading to breakouts and other issues. Using shampoos and conditioners that are gentle on the skin is essential. It helps fight dandruff while keeping the scalp clean and healthy," said Brigadier General Professor Dr Md Shamshul Huda.
For better scalp care it is helpful to get scalp massager. Its easy to use; not only does it aid hair growth, but it also soothes the scalp, stimulates circulation, exfoliates stubborn build-up, and gives a deeper, more satisfying cleanse.
The main trick is to know your skin type and pick your the products: shampoo, conditioner, serum and hair marks to use that benefits you. When it comes to skin and hair, a little care goes a long way!
