Roll Xpress Cafe: Two decades of rolls, memories and comfort
A Banani favourite since 2001, Roll Xpress helped put Kolkata-style rolls on Dhaka’s food map and continues to serve a generous spread of subcontinental comfort food
In a city where street-side dining is a way of life, Roll Xpress Cafe revolutionised Dhaka's culinary landscape back in 2001.
Long before artisanal wraps and specialised snack corners dominated the capital, this beloved place brought the authentic, flaky, and savoury magic of Kolkata-style rolls directly to the local food scene.
The trendsetting hotspot in the upscale neighbourhood of Banani quickly became a favourite among students, office-goers, and families alike.
But Roll Xpress isn't just a quick bite corner. It has a charming, cottage-like interior, along with a spacious, breezy outdoor gazebo, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere at any time of day.
While it built its legacy on perfectly wrapped, sizzling paratha rolls—ranging from budget-friendly classics to the heavily spiced Chicken Hariyali and creamy Chicken Reshmi—the menu has expanded over the decades into a celebration of subcontinental comfort food.
Beef Paneer Roll
The paratha is fairly crispy on the outside yet moist on the inside, making for a satisfying first bite. A layer of thinly sliced fresh onions and capsicum, tossed with just a hint of tamarind pulp, adds a tangy kick to the roll. Alongside it comes succulent grilled beef with a subtle curried flavour. But the real star is the abundant amount of cubed paneer packed into the roll.
Every bite becomes a little dance of grilled beef, soft and creamy paneer, and the crunch of fresh onion and capsicum, all brought together with a light drizzle of the beef gravy. The flavours complement each other beautifully, creating a rich and indulgent roll.
There is, however, one major caveat: the oil. With every bite comes a generous amount of it, enough to leave your hands noticeably greasy. So, make sure you have a handful of tissues nearby before you dig in.

Dahi Vada
The dahi vada gets the balance of flavours almost exactly right. The dahi has just the right amount of tanginess and sweetness, creating a sweet-and-sour combination that feels instantly refreshing. The vada itself seems to have been properly soaked in tamarind water, giving it a soft, succulent texture and allowing the tangy flavour to seep into every bite.
The only element that felt slightly unnecessary was the presence of cardamom seeds. With raw cumin used as a garnish, there is already a subtle cumin flavour running through every bite. Since dahi vada is ultimately about freshness and refreshment, I think a few mint leaves would have worked better than coriander, adding an extra layer of coolness.
That said, these are minor preferences. Overall, this is easily one of the finest dahi vadas you will find in Dhaka.

Mango Lassi
While regular lassis often retain little lumps of yoghurt, this yoghurt drink is completely different. It is creamy yet remarkably smooth, with none of the lumps, and has exactly the amount of sweetness you would want from a good lassi.
The creamy mango flavour initially makes you wonder if you are drinking a milkshake. Then the unmistakable yoghurt tang comes through and reminds you that, no, this is very much a lassi. The mango and yoghurt flavours complement each other without either one overpowering the other.
Overall, this is one of the creamiest and smoothest lassis I have had — indulgent enough to feel like a dessert, but refreshing enough to accompany a meal.

Xpress Chicken Reshmi Roll
This is a much more balanced roll compared to the beef paneer version. Most notably, it is far more restrained with the oil. The malai chicken kebab is properly cooked, tender and succulent, with subtle notes of hing adding an interesting savoury depth.
The tangy, crispy onion and capsicum salad makes another appearance, providing the necessary crunch and acidity, while the paratha is once again perfectly crispy on the outside and moist on the inside.
This roll is particularly satisfying because of its restraint. There is no excessive spilling of oil, and you can finish the entire roll without your hands feeling greasy afterwards.
It feels wholesome, well-balanced and complete — the kind of roll that leaves you feeling like you have had an actual meal rather than simply indulged in something heavy.

Paper Butter Masala Dosa
A long, buttery and crispy dosa that somehow remains wonderfully soft when you bite into it. It comes with two sides — coconut chutney and daal — giving you different flavour combinations to play around with as you work your way through the dosa.
The coconut chutney has a savoury character with a subtle sweetness and aroma that pairs beautifully with the buttery dosa. The daal, meanwhile, is slightly soupy and vegetable-forward, bringing a tangy and savoury contrast with a gentle hint of cumin.
And then comes the filling. As you keep tearing pieces of the dosa and dipping them into the accompanying sides, you eventually reach the spicy aloo mixture hidden inside. The heat and spice from the potatoes provide the final layer of flavour, turning what starts as a buttery, crispy dosa into a much more fulfilling and flavour-packed meal.

Kulfi
A chilled, creamy malai kulfi that feels like the perfect way to end the meal. The texture is dense and velvety, with that unmistakable richness that comes from slow-cooked milk. Every bite carries a very subtle hint of pista, adding a gentle nuttiness without taking away from the milky character of the kulfi.
The best part comes as the kulfi begins to melt. As it softens, the concentrated milkiness becomes even more pronounced, almost turning into a thick, creamy milk dessert in your mouth. There is something deeply comforting about the combination of cold, dense kulfi and the rich flavour of milk slowly melting away.
