The colour, shape and design of floor tiles are important elements while designing your house. Not only do they reflect your taste in home décor, they also give the spaces different characters.

White or light coloured tiles tend to make rooms look bigger whereas colourful tiles with beautiful designs can make bathrooms look brighter. Tile prices usually vary depending on size and material.

Porcelain tiles

Porcelain tiles look like marble and are moderately water-resistant so your kitchen and bedroom floors can be covered with them. They also glisten beautifully, which make your floors look extra special. Grey or silver tinged porcelain tiles can also be used to cover bathroom walls.

Ceramic tiles

Ceramic tiles do not last as long as porcelain tiles and are more porous. However, these can be used for indoor and outdoor decoration. They are stain-resistant, and easy to clean and replace.

There is an argument that porcelain and ceramic are the same in quality. However, S M Zamsadul Alam Sagor, sales and marketing at X Monica said, "A special layer on the tiles creates the difference between ceramic and porcelain, so they are really not the same in quality. But one could rely on ceramic for rough usage."

Marble tiles are semi-translucent and give off a pleasant white glare that makes rooms look bigger and livelier.

Anamul Hosan Nasim, chief Administrator of Aman Marble and Granite Industries Ltd said, "Only five years ago, marble tiles were not as popular as they are now. Now many people are using it to decorate floors."

Marble tiles are priced between Tk220 and Tk2850 per square feet.

Artificial flooring

Artificial flooring these days look so real that people choose it over other tiles. With artificial rocks, you can make your place look like a cave or, if you cover your floors with artificial grass, you can make them look like a forest bed. Per square feet of artificial tiles are sold between Tk56 and Tk285.

Ibrahim Khandoker, salesperson at Al-Ibrahim Granite Ltd, said that they only sell artificial flooring because of its huge market demand. It looks standard, shiny, and attractive because of its unique designs and textures.

However, for the long run, artificial flooring may not be the best choice because it needs continuous care. Nevertheless, you can always use it to enhance the beauty of small spaces in the house.

For a natural and rustic look at your place, wooden tiles look good. It does require to be polished occasionally to maintain the gloss. Bedrooms, living rooms and dining areas can be covered in wood but they should be kept dry all the time.

Mosaic flooring

Mosaic tiles are usually made with fragments of marble, granite and quartz with concrete. Although not as popular as they used to be, there is still a high demand for mosaic floors.

Mosaic is mostly used in bathrooms, offices and hospitals, as well as swimming pools.

Carpet flooring

If you are looking for something cheap, simple and available, carpet flooring is perhaps what you are looking for. Carpets are made from wool, or synthetic fibres such as polypropylene, acrylic, nylon, or polyester. However, carpets also collect dust and mites so they need to be thoroughly cleaned every month.
