Amphan causes Tk2.25cr damage in Sundarbans

The cyclonic storm Amphan has uprooted around 12,300 trees, mostly Garans, in the Bangladeshi part of the Sundarbans mangrove forest.

Super cyclone Amphan, that had later lost some strength and was classified as an extremely severe cyclonic storm, battered the country's coastal districts on May 20. The storm caused huge devastation in the Sundarbans. Around 10,500 Garan trees along with some other species were uprooted, and infrastructure was ravaged, the Chief Forest Conservator Amir Hosain Chowdhury told The Business Standard on Tuesday.

He said the estimated cost of the damages was Tk 2.25 crore.

Fortunately, no casualties of wild animals were reported, he added.

The Forest Department formed probe committees on Thursday to prepare the damage assessment report.
