Import-Export resumes through Benapole land port

Import and export through the Benapole - Petrapole border crossing point resumed from Sunday, after being closed for four days.

The matter was confirmed by Additional Commissioner at Benapole Customs Dr Syed Niamul Islam.

Import-export activities between the two countries will be in full swing from Monday.

Dr Syed Niamul Islam said, "Five truckloads of goods were exported to India on Sunday afternoon."

"Some trucks with goods for import will enter the port after dusk. From now on, trade between the two countries will run at the same pace.", added Niamul.

Import and export at the border point was halted on March 22 due to fears of corona infection. Locally, border trade at the land port resumed on June 7 after a series of meetings.

Since then Indian products have been coming into Bangladesh, but at that time no Bangladeshi goods were exported to India.

In the last 100 days, no goods were exported from Bangladesh to India. But on the 77th day of the lockdown, Indian products started coming to Bangladesh.

While Indian traders could easily ship their exports to Bangladesh through the port, traders on the other side could not. Truckloads of products have been sitting on this side of the border though the rains and storms.

As a result. the quality of the products is deteriorating and traders here in Bangladesh are suffering huge losses.

In these circumstances, clearing and forwarding (C&F) traders and exporters stopped import Indian goods through Benapole-Petrapole port since the morning of July 1 as Indian authorities did not let export goods enter into their country from Bangladesh.
