The Bashundhara City Shopping Complex authorities have decided not to reopen it before Eid in a bid to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Confirming the matter, Mohammad Abu Tayeb, media adviser to Bashundhara Group, told The Business Standard, "The market will remain closed until the coronavirus situation improves in the country."

The decision was taken as per a directive from Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, he added.

On Tuesday, after a meeting of the national technical advisory committee on Covid-19, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said the reopening of shopping malls and other businesses could lead to further transmission of coronavirus.

On May 4, the commerce ministry said shops and markets could be kept open from 10 am to 4 pm every day from May 10, maintaining health guidelines.

Health experts criticised the government's decision and said if the shopping malls reopened, the coronavirus situation would deteriorate further.
