BGMEA seeks labour leaders’ support for garment worker database

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has called for assistance from labour leaders and relevant stakeholders to create a comprehensive database of garment workers for implementing various welfare programmes for the employees.
The appeal was made today during a meeting between BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu and leaders of labour federations at the BGMEA office in Uttara of Dhaka, according to a press release.
"Creating a database is crucial for working on worker welfare issues, such as the implementation of food rationing cards," said the BGMEA president.
The BGMEA press statement further noted that the association has requested the support of labour federations to maintain sound law and order and a stable labour environment in the garment sector, ensuring the smooth operation of its overall activities.
The press release specifically highlighted a request to labour federation leaders to help prevent illegal demands and minor incidents from escalating into workers vandalising nearby factories or blocking roads to press demands, which causes inconvenience to the general public.
The BGMEA also announced the formation of regional complaint resolution cells in worker-dense areas such as Gazipur, Ashulia, Savar, Mirpur, and Narayanganj to address labour-related issues.
The press release mentioned that labour leaders have welcomed these initiatives.
