Japan seeks better logistics to boost investment in Bangladesh
Jetro calls for improved port management and regional connectivity

Japan has reiterated its companies keen interest in investing in Bangladesh but stressed the need for improvements in business-friendly infrastructure, particularly in logistics and port management.
Kazuaki Kataoka, country representative of the Japan External Trade Organization (Jetro), made the remark during a meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) at the association's office in Uttara today (30 July), according to a BGMEA press release shared following the meeting.
Kataoka said, "Japan is one of Bangladesh's major investment partners, and many Japanese companies are keen to expand their businesses here. But for that to happen, better port operations, logistics development, and enhanced connectivity with neighbouring countries are essential."
In the discussion, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu raised the ongoing negotiations over the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between Bangladesh and Japan.
He emphasised the importance of including Single Stage Rules of Origin in the agreement to simplify the export process of Bangladeshi garments to Japan.
"The BGMEA has been focusing on diversifying garment export markets for strategic reasons, and Japan remains a market with immense untapped potential for Bangladesh," Mahmud said.
"Although our current apparel exports to Japan exceed $1 billion, the actual potential is far greater. We see Jetro's active support as crucial in realising that potential."
Jetro plays a significant role in encouraging Japanese companies to invest in Bangladesh and promotes Japanese products and technologies locally.
At the same time, it assists Bangladeshi goods and services in gaining access to the Japanese market. The organisation also works closely with the Bangladesh government, business bodies, and other stakeholders to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
Senior BGMEA leaders and Jetro officials were also present during the meeting.
