Bangladesh Ship Recycling Board, BSTI sign MoU to boost safe ship recycling
BSRB and BSTI will collaborate on standardisation, certification, compliance monitoring, and technical capacity-building
The Bangladesh Ship Recycling Board (BSRB) and the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) formalised a partnership today (27 November) with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aiming to strengthen standards and safety in the country's ship recycling sector.
The ceremony, held at the Ministry of Industries conference room, brought together top officials, including Md Obaidur Rahman, secretary of the Ministry of Industries; SM Ferdous Alam, director general (Grade-1) of BSTI; and ASM Shafiul Alam Talukder, director general of BSRB.
Senior representatives from the three institutions also attended, underlining a shared commitment to modernising and regulating ship recycling operations, according to a press release.
Under the MoU, BSRB and BSTI will collaborate on standardisation, certification, compliance monitoring, and technical capacity-building. The agreement also seeks to align Bangladesh's ship recycling practices with the Hong Kong Convention (HKC), promoting safety, sustainability, and environmental responsibility in the industry.
Shafiul Alam Talukder described the partnership as a significant step toward accountability and internationally compliant operations, while Md Obaidur Rahman highlighted the potential for the collaboration to drive a "safer, greener ship recycling industry" in Bangladesh.
The MoU signals an important move toward enhancing regulatory oversight, adopting international standards, and fostering institutional collaboration in one of the country's key industrial sectors.
